FAB is a beach read that is at home in many other places. I was handed an advance and I didn't think I would like it, I have to admit. I thought it was going to be your stereotypical book about the stereotypical lives of black women who I couldn't recognize, who I couldn't sympathize with, and who weren't *real*. I was wrong. Very wrong.
FAB is a wonderful book because it concerns real lives and real women. Successful black women trying to do it all while facing off with the cultural, financial, and emotional roadblocks that black women in particular struggle against. Although these women are flawed (and thus real)all you want to do is sit around with them on a Saturday night and laugh your head off for hours and hours.
The characters are glamourous, but not in a Hollywood way, more in a trip and fall in the middle of a busy intersection and rip the seat of your pants and still get up and walk with grace, way. The writing is fun and light and smart and witty and this book raises the bar on the Terry McMillians of the world.
FAB is a sexy, funny, real read that is about loving yourself and your posse. It makes you appreciate the pals you have and makes you wanna get some if you don't have any like this.
Plus it made me laugh out loud on the NYC subway and that is no mean feat.
