(More customer reviews)Big Leon as his milkman classmate observed has the gift of gab and then more. The book is in essence a love story but it paints a picture of the destruction of a city, the movement to another and a family where merit overcomes poverty. It is an American story. Leon takes you to the hillbily and black/tan bars of Detroit, the riots of '43 and '67, and the downtown law firms. You can feel the tension when Leon separates the black thugs at the point of his gun under his coat. His motor city law firms are as tense as associates vie for promotion while cross town Ford lawyers pray for retirement day. The trip west brings a new beginning where he embraces the open spaces of horses and sunsets while pumping iron and pleading his next case. There is the death of the EKJ firm and the birth of another and with each step is his high school sweetheart and mother of his three beautiful girls. He is tough and soft, playful and humble, and ultimately devastated by Patty's death; and yet after forty eight years he recovers with the help of Debby and his girls. It is a good read- I recommend it highly.

Candid forthright graphic at times a bit outrageous; whatever else may be said of Mr. Bess:"His place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt, "Man in the Arena""Leon is the kid from the rough neighborhoods of Detroit who on his sheer smarts and gumption became extremely successful and never grew a big head." -Gary Fry, former law partner at EK&J "When Leon comes down to Cochise County, he doesn't act like those other Phoenix lawyers." -Wallace Riley, former Cochise County Superior Court Judge"When they made Leon, they definitely threw away the mold." -David Wm.
