(More customer reviews)Caitlin is a spoiled Southern beauty whose life was designed to be a winner of beauty pageants. Her mother had nothing more in mind for her, other than that she marry very well and decorate the planet with her flawless looks. Caitlin found that under the ultimate crunch she broke out in hives, which ruined her chances at the Miss Alabama prize and obviously anything bigger. This book deals with what may happen next, once she frees herself from the family ties and expectations that resulted in a full-fledged case of existential doubt.
This book presents a colorful cast of Southern characters, from a ne'er-do-well boyfriend of the good-ole-fratboy variety to a veritable Wicked Witch of the West mother, a sluttish country cousin, a lovable passive-aggressive father--and many more who will break the mold of stereotypes-- all gathered at the school's Homecoming where, as outgoing queen, Caitlin is required to crown next year's. Strider draws a very accurate picture of the locales in and around Mobile and introduces us to any number of dangerous types who haunt the life of a beautiful girl anywhere. Her ear for dialogue and accent is excellent, and her story draws us in while we turn from one character to the next, looking for someone to like. Caitlin is so well-realized that the reader may remain somewhat ambivalent about her almost to the end. It's like a well-done movie or television series, fraught with surprising situations and amusing people. A good little book and a juicy read.

"Homecoming" is the story of Caitlin Pearson, a college freshman on her first visit home who discovers, to her dismay, that "out of sight did not necessarily guarantee out of mind." Over the course of her visit, Caitlin endures an overly-controlling mother and her latest redecorating project - Caitlin's oversexed younger cousin, a humiliating stint as her former high school's returning Homecoming Queen, and an old-fashioned booze-and-jealousy spiked family Thanksgiving. These adventures force Caitlin to confront old wounds and new fears, as well as a future filled with uncertainty, promise, and romance.
