I want a shopping guide to be like my favorite shopping girlfriend: straight-talking, fun, and savvy, with a great eye for what looks good and an encyclopedic, up-to-date knowledge of what's out there and where to find it. Well, it can't change a size for you or do up that last button in back, but the Ultimate Guide to Shopping on Oahu pretty much fits the bill on every other count.
The shopping scene in Honolulu, where I live, has transformed in recent years, from a Sears/Armani/muumuu scene to one that is rich in everything from locally owned designers and jewel-box boutiques to a plethora of mainland and international chains. Writer Kathryn Drury Wagner has scouted out the best and most interesting of the new possibilities and included several reminders of old-time standbys who have always offered great deals on great clothes but had gotten lost in the recent retail shuffle. Between these tasteful covers, you'll find everything from chic dresses made out of recycled vintage muu'muu material to the best places to find distinctly un-tent-like maternity clothes and organic baby gear.
With the economy in a tailspin, the chapters I made a beeline for were the one on vintage/consignment stores (fortunately, we have a few good ones on O'ahu) and the one called "I Need a Fashion Fix! (Doses of style for the fiscally challenged)." I have folded the corners down on too many pages to count. Hawaii women take note: there's also a chapter for petites.
This (deliberately?) purse-sized volume is packed with clearly laid out maps, tips, and information on parking (crucial) and alternative transport. Guidebooks tend to date fast, but if there are future editions, this is one investment I think I would be prepared to make again.
